SUMMARY:Workshop at the 2026 ESSE Conference: Linguistic Creativity in the Age of Generative AI
DESCRIPTION:18th European Society for the Study of English Conference\, University of Santiago de Compostela \nWorkshop #15 on Linguistic Creativity in the Age of Generative AI \nThis workshop aims to bring together linguists of all stripes (e.g. those interested in the study of English semantics\, morphology\, phraseology\, syntax\, or human and machine translation from/into English) who share an interest in the ways in which the recent advances in AI-enhanced language technology\, such as LLM-powered chatbots and neural machine translation tools\, are reshaping scholarly views of linguistic creativity. We distinguish between the process and product sides of creativity (see e.g. Runco 2024) and assume the existence of a cline between rule-based F(ixed)-creativity and rule-bending E(xtending)-creativity / X(travagant)-creativity (see e.g. Bergs 2019\, Koliopoulou & Walker 2024)\, which leads us to narrow the workshop’s focus to linguistic products characterized by a distance from the pole of F-creativity — we take the concept of linguistic creative output to broadly encompass any innovation that is not strictly predictable from the rules of the linguistic system. \nWe invite empirical contributions on topics including (but not limited to) the following: \n\nlinguistic analyses of AI-generated creative outputs\, including their biases and other limitations;\nAI-based linguistic analyses of creative outputs\, including their biases and other limitations;\ncreativity ratings of AI-generated / hybrid (e.g. through post-editing) / human-generated outputs\, in terms of originality and/or acceptability (including grammaticality judgments).\n\nPapers may focus on a large variety of creative outputs\, whether they are created from scratch\, derived from previous creative work\, or translated.

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the 14th International Conference on Third Language Acquisition and Multilingualism\, which will take place on 3 – 5 September 2026. The conference is organised jointly by the Faculty of English and the Faculty of Modern Languages and Literatures at Adam Mickiewicz University\, Poznań\, Poland. \nWe warmly invite you to submit your original research contributions on any facet of multilingualism\, focusing on the acquisition or use of three or more languages. We encourage papers that are rooted in either empirical or theoretical frameworks\, aiming to make a significant impact in this vibrant field. Your insights and findings will be invaluable to our community! \nPlenary Speakers:\nThe conference will feature keynote talks by:\n– Guillaume Thierry (Bangor University)\n– Agnieszka Otwinowska-Kasztelanic (University of Warsaw)\n– Ludovica Serratrice (University of Reading and UiT The Arctic University of Norway) \nPresentation Formats:\nWe welcome submissions in the following categories:\n– Individual papers\n30-minute slots: 20 minutes for presentation\, followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Sessions will run in parallel.\n– Posters\nPosters will be displayed during designated sessions scheduled in the main programme.\n– Doctoral student workshop\nDesigned for PhD students to present ongoing research and receive feedback from senior scholars (discussants) and peers. Each slot includes 15 minutes for presentation and 15 minutes for discussion. Accepted participants will be asked to submit their materials (abstract\, presentation slides\, and questions for the discussant) ahead of the event (deadline TBA). The doctoral workshop will take place in the afternoon of 2 September 2026.
