SUMMARY:Workshop at the 2026 ESSE Conference: Linguistic Creativity in the Age of Generative AI
DESCRIPTION:18th European Society for the Study of English Conference\, University of Santiago de Compostela \nWorkshop #15 on Linguistic Creativity in the Age of Generative AI \nThis workshop aims to bring together linguists of all stripes (e.g. those interested in the study of English semantics\, morphology\, phraseology\, syntax\, or human and machine translation from/into English) who share an interest in the ways in which the recent advances in AI-enhanced language technology\, such as LLM-powered chatbots and neural machine translation tools\, are reshaping scholarly views of linguistic creativity. We distinguish between the process and product sides of creativity (see e.g. Runco 2024) and assume the existence of a cline between rule-based F(ixed)-creativity and rule-bending E(xtending)-creativity / X(travagant)-creativity (see e.g. Bergs 2019\, Koliopoulou & Walker 2024)\, which leads us to narrow the workshop’s focus to linguistic products characterized by a distance from the pole of F-creativity — we take the concept of linguistic creative output to broadly encompass any innovation that is not strictly predictable from the rules of the linguistic system. \nWe invite empirical contributions on topics including (but not limited to) the following: \n\nlinguistic analyses of AI-generated creative outputs\, including their biases and other limitations;\nAI-based linguistic analyses of creative outputs\, including their biases and other limitations;\ncreativity ratings of AI-generated / hybrid (e.g. through post-editing) / human-generated outputs\, in terms of originality and/or acceptability (including grammaticality judgments).\n\nPapers may focus on a large variety of creative outputs\, whether they are created from scratch\, derived from previous creative work\, or translated.

SUMMARY:Hispanic Linguistics Symposium 2025
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome submissions for oral and poster presentations. This year’s theme\, Theorizing Methods in Hispanic Linguistics\, is broad and encompasses all subfields of Hispanic Linguistics and all methodological and theoretical approaches to the field. We envision HLS 2025 as a venue for the critical re-examination of our collective theoretical stances\, potentially leading to the cross-pollination of ideas among Hispanic linguistics scholars from different methodological clines. Reviewing\, scrutinizing\, and ultimately re-envisioning our methods with fresh perspectives on our work and the subject of study is essential to advancing our field. HLS meetings have traditionally offered an important platform for discussions about advances in linguistics based on data drawn from the Spanish-speaking world and neighboring communities (e.g.\, Catalan\, Euskera\, Guaraní\, Portuguese\, Quechua)\, and we aim to honor this tradition. \nAt HLS 2025\, we plan to have the following presentation formats: oral presentation\, poster presentation\, project launch presentation\, colloquia. \n1. Oral Presentations\nFormal oral presentations are single- or co-authored research contributions in any field of Hispanic linguistics; these are 20-minutes oral presentations followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer period. \n2. Poster Presentations\nPoster presentations are single- or co-authored research contributions in any field in Hispanic linguistics; this format offers a platform for scholars to share their work\, gather feedback\, and engage in intellectual discussions with a dynamic audience. \n3. Project Launch\nProject launch presentations are brief presentations. They are 10-minutes oral presentations followed by 5 minutes of discussion. This opportunity encourages researchers from all ranks to discuss their research plans and receive constructive and actionable feedback and advice from the Hispanic linguistics scholarly community. Early career scholars and graduate students are particularly encouraged to submit. \n4. Colloquia\nA colloquium consists of a sequence of presentations sharing a research topic\, theme\, or perspective. One-hour colloquia allow for extended discussion on a particular topic in Hispanic linguistics\, achieved through a sequence of individual oral presentations linked to the colloquium theme and to each other and followed by a brief discussion. Although the number of presenters\, the length of each presentation\, the format or structure of the session\, and the inclusion of a discussant are left up to the discretion of the colloquium organizer\, they typically consist of three individual papers that are closely connected to the same topic. They typically conclude with a summary by the colloquium organizer and a brief discussion.
